URSL

URSL stands for Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy – a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat ureteral stones (kidney stones that have moved into the ureter). It involves the use of a ureteroscope (a thin, tube-like instrument) to locate and break the stone into smaller fragments, which are then removed or passed naturally.

When is URSL Recommended?

URSL (Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy) is recommended when a patient has stones located in the ureter or lower part of the kidney that are causing symptoms or complications. This laser-based procedure is typically advised in the following situations:

  • Ureteral stones that do not pass naturally despite medication and time
  • Stones larger than 6–7 mm that are unlikely to pass on their own.
  • Severe or persistent pain due to ureteral obstruction
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by obstructing stones
  • Visible blood in the urine (hematuria) linked to ureteric stones
  • Hydronephrosis (swelling of the kidney) due to urine backup

  • Who is Eligible for URSL Laser Treatment?

URSL (Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy) is recommended for patients who have stones located in the ureter or kidney, especially those that are:
    • Causing pain, blockage, or infection.
    • Not passing naturally through urine
    • Too large for medication-based treatment
    • Resistant to other non-invasive procedures (like ESWL).

Patients of most age groups may be eligible if they are medically fit for endoscopic surgery. However, the procedure is best suited for stones up to 2 cm in size, and suitability is determined after imaging and consultation with a urologist.

Diagnosis Before Laser Treatment for URSL

Before undergoing URSL surgery, a comprehensive diagnosis is essential to ensure the procedure is both safe and effective. Urologists typically follow these key diagnostic steps:

  • Ultrasound (USG) or Non-contrast CT KUB (Kidney, Ureter, Bladder) scan to confirm the location, size, and number of stones.
  • Urine tests to check for infection or blood in urine.
  • Blood tests to assess kidney function and rule out infection or clotting issues.
  • X-rays or IVP (Intravenous Pyelogram) in some cases to evaluate urinary tract anatomy.

    FAQ About URSL Surgery

    When is URSL needed?

URSL is recommended when a kidney stone is stuck in the ureter, causing pain, infection, blockage, or if it’s too large to pass on its own.

    Is URSL painful?

URSL is performed under anesthesia (general or spinal), so you won’t feel pain during the procedure. Some mild discomfort or burning during urination may occur post-surgery, which usually resolves in a few days.

How long does the URSL procedure take?

The procedure typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the size and location of the stone.

Will a stent be placed after URSL?

Yes, a temporary DJ stent is often placed to ensure urine flow and allow the ureter to heal. It is usually removed after 1–2 weeks.

What is the recovery time after URSL?

Most patients can resume light activities within 24–48 hours, and full recovery is expected in about a week. If a stent is placed, some discomfort may persist until it is removed.
