How is the IVF Process Done?
The IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) process involves several carefully coordinated steps over a few weeks. It begins with ovarian stimulation, where fertility medications help the ovaries produce multiple eggs. Once the eggs mature, they are retrieved through a minor surgical procedure called egg retrieval. At the same time, a sperm sample is collected from the male partner or a donor.
Eggs and sperm are then combined in the laboratory for fertilisation. After 3 – 5 days, the healthiest embryo is selected and transferred into the woman’s uterus in a procedure known as embryo transfer. If implantation is successful, pregnancy occurs; a blood test roughly two weeks after transfer confirms the result.
Who Is Eligible for IVF Treatment?
IVF is recommended for couples or individuals facing a variety of fertility challenges. You may be eligible if:
- You have blocked or damaged fallopian tubes.
- You suffer from endometriosis or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
- You have low ovarian reserve or are of advanced maternal age.
- Your partner has a low sperm count or poor sperm motility.
- You have had unsuccessful attempts with other fertility treatments.
- You are using donor eggs, donor sperm, or surrogacy.
- You have unexplained infertility despite regular efforts to conceive.
Eligibility varies by age, medical history, and overall health, so a thorough consultation with a fertility specialist is essential before starting IVF.

FAQ About IVF Treatment
How long does the IVF process take?
A single IVF cycle typically takes around 4 to 6 weeks, including ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilization, embryo transfer, and a two-week wait to confirm pregnancy.
Is IVF painful?
IVF is generally not painful, but some steps like hormone injections and egg retrieval may cause mild discomfort. Anesthesia is used during the retrieval to minimize any pain.
What is the success rate of IVF?
Success rates depend on several factors including age, fertility issues, and clinic expertise. On average, women under 35 have a success rate of 40–50% per cycle, while the rate decreases with age.
Are there any risks or side effects of IVF?
-
Possible risks include ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), multiple pregnancies, and mild side effects like bloating, cramping, or mood swings due to hormone medications.
Can IVF be used with donor sperm or eggs?
Yes, IVF can be done using donor sperm, donor eggs, or even donor embryos if needed, depending on the couple’s medical history or fertility condition.
Is IVF the right option for me?
IVF is suitable for individuals or couples facing conditions like blocked fallopian tubes, PCOS, endometriosis, low sperm count, or unexplained infertility. A fertility specialist will evaluate your case to recommend the best treatment.
