When is ESWL Recommended?
ESWL is typically recommended when a kidney stone is too large to pass on its own, causes significant pain, blocks the flow of urine, or leads to infection. It is most effective for stones that are less than 2 centimeters in diameter and located in the kidney or upper part of the ureter. The procedure is generally not suitable for very large stones, very hard stones, or stones located in certain parts of the urinary tract. Additionally, ESWL may not be recommended for pregnant women, individuals with bleeding disorders, or people who have infections or certain anatomical abnormalities.
The procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis, meaning the patient can go home the same day. While ESWL is considered safe, it can cause mild side effects such as bruising on the back or abdomen, blood in the urine, or discomfort as stone fragments pass. In some cases, multiple sessions may be needed if the stone is not completely broken up.
