IVF (In Vitro Fertilization)

IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) is a fertility treatment where an egg is fertilized by sperm outside the body, in a laboratory. Once the fertilized egg (embryo) develops, it is transferred into the woman’s uterus with the hope of achieving pregnancy.

How is the IVF Process Done?

The IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) process involves several carefully coordinated steps over a few weeks. It begins with ovarian stimulation, where the woman takes fertility medications to produce multiple eggs. Once the eggs mature, they are retrieved through a minor surgical procedure called egg retrieval. At the same time, a sperm sample is collected from the male partner or a donor. The eggs and sperm are then combined in a laboratory for fertilization. After 3 to 5 days, the healthiest fertilized egg (embryo) is selected and transferred into the woman’s uterus in a procedure known as embryo transfer. If implantation is successful, pregnancy occurs. A blood test is done about two weeks after the embryo transfer to confirm the pregnancy.

    FAQ About IVF Treatment

How long does the IVF process take?

A single IVF cycle typically takes around 4 to 6 weeks, including ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilization, embryo transfer, and a two-week wait to confirm pregnancy.

    • Possible risks include ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), multiple pregnancies, and mild side effects like bloating, cramping, or mood swings due to hormone medications.

Can IVF be used with donor sperm or eggs?

Yes, IVF can be done using donor sperm, donor eggs, or even donor embryos if needed, depending on the couple’s medical history or fertility condition.

Is IVF the right option for me?

IVF is suitable for individuals or couples facing conditions like blocked fallopian tubes, PCOS, endometriosis, low sperm count, or unexplained infertility. A fertility specialist will evaluate your case to recommend the best treatment.
