Hydrocelectomy

A surgical technique called a hydrocelectomy is used to remove the fluid-filled sac that surrounds the testicle, which causes scrotal enlargement. Although hydroceles are often harmless, if they are big, they may cause discomfort, weight, or embarrassment.

What is Hydrocelectomy

A hydrocelectomy is a surgical procedure to remove or repair a hydrocele, which is a fluid-filled sac around a testicle that causes swelling in the scrotum. Hydroceles are usually painless but can become large, uncomfortable, or cosmetically concerning. They are more common in newborns but can also affect adult men, especially after injury, infection, or inflammation.

There are a few different surgical approaches depending on the size, location, and recurrence of the hydrocele:

1. Open Hydrocelectomy (Conventional Surgery)

  • A small incision is made in the scrotum or groin.
  • The hydrocele sac is drained and removed.
  • Often used for large or recurrent hydroceles.

2. Needle Aspiration (with or without Sclerotherapy)

  • Fluid is drained using a needle.
  • A sclerosing agent may be injected to prevent recurrence.
  • Minimally invasive but has a higher chance of recurrence.

    FAQ About Hydrolectomy Treatment

Can a hydrocele go away on its own?

In infants, hydroceles often resolve on their own by the age of 1–2 years. In adults, hydroceles usually do not resolve without treatment and may continue to grow in size.

    Is hydrocelectomy a major surgery?

No, it’s a minor outpatient surgical procedure, usually completed within an hour.

    Is hydrocelectomy painful?

The procedure is done under anesthesia, so there is no pain during surgery. Mild discomfort may occur during recovery, which is easily manageable with painkillers.

How long is the recovery after hydrocelectomy?

Most patients recover fully in 1–2 weeks. Strenuous activities and sexual activity should be avoided for 2–3 weeks.

    9. Will the hydrocele come back after surgery?

Recurrence is rare after a properly performed hydrocelectomy. However, needle aspiration without sclerotherapy has a higher recurrence rate.

    Can hydrocelectomy affect fertility?

Hydrocelectomy does not affect fertility. Large hydroceles may cause discomfort or pressure on the testicles, so removing them can improve reproductive health in some cases.
